Glimpses is a poetry collection tracing Stefanía Guðbjörg Gísladóttir's life between two homelands, Iceland and Australia. Structured in three parts ("From Iceland," "To Australia," and "Remembrance"), the collection moves through childhood memories on an Icelandic farm, the disorientation and discovery of building a new life abroad, and tender tributes to family members she has lost a sister, brother, niece, father, and two uncles.
Written in spare, image-driven verse, the poems capture farm rhythms (milking cows, raking hay, herding sheep), Icelandic folklore and landscape (elves, runes, waterfalls, moonlit winters), and the quiet ache of distance from home. The closing "Remembrance" section is especially personal, named elegies that honor specific loved ones with warmth rather than sorrow, asking, "why should I write of grief" when memory itself carries their spirit forward.
Originally published in Icelandic in 2004 and revised through several English editions, this 2026 edition is Stefanía's own English translation of her original work, a lifetime's glimpses of two worlds held together by memory, family, and love.
